When The Will Is There, But The Focus Isn't: The Handy-Dandy List
If you’re a free-spirited creative like me, you rarely need a list. Ideas come out of nowhere. A shower results in a flurry of actions you should take. A meditation session gifts you with several visuals of things you should do. A short walk outside in the brilliant sun evokes an eureka moment
And those days are amazing—a pure godsend.
But what about those days when you go to your favorite coffee joint, open your laptop, and stare blankly at your laptop as you wait for your Higher-Self to hand you instructions?
You tap the screen, “Hello, is anyone there?”
And then your Higher-Self taps you, “Uh, hello, YOU can do some of the heavy lifting, too.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
THOSE moments.
What do you do? Do you give up, close your laptop, go home, and watch your favorite Netflix series like Behind Your Eyes as you shovel handful after handful of ranch-flavored Doritos in your mouth?
Nope. You push through.
This is a needed lull and a test of perseverance! Will you falter when the answers aren’t handed to you?
Are you weak? Spineless…ooey-gooey like the center of a brownie baked just right…yum.
No! You’re none of those things!
What are you?
You’re strong and brave and resilient…you’re a freaking visionary, and when the vision doesn’t come to you, you come to it…with a list!
What do you want to work on today?
What’s something you’ve been avoiding that you should tackle to free up some mental space?
Maybe you need more than one list—perhaps a short-term list and a long-term list?
Or do you need daily lists?
Whatever you do, start small—I’m pretty good at overwhelming myself with too many details. Keep it short and sweet!
To ease the mental load, I’m providing you with my simple Top 5 list for today:
1. Write an article about the beauty of a simple list
2. Study SQL and Python
3. Tinker with candle labels
4. Read over/Edit/Add to book
5. Be fabulous
You see, when you write it down, it looks less scary, less monstrous, less Bowzer-like. You can conquer a list…You are The Destroyer of Lists.
No longer do you have to wait for divine guidance to rain golden showers on you like Zeus trysting with Danaë. Nope, now you have your handy-dandy list.
Try it !
